In this essay I will discuss a crucial topic that does occur on a daily basis, which is racism. Racism is a term used to describe the views and actions of an ethnic group of people towards another based on the idea that the two groups are distinguished by race and that the group with racist views believes itself to be superior to the other. Racial injustice remains a real vulnerability in our democracy, one that foreign powers are only too willing to attack. Did you know, African American men and women are most likely to be affected by police brutality because of the color of their skin?
The novel Holes, written by Louis Sachar unravels the many mysteries and answers to everything with her descriptive writing. One story I liked in particular is the story of Sam the Onion Man, and Kate Barlow. The two mark an important time in history, mainly because the story Holes unties from them, leaving history at Camp Green Lake before the both of them passed away, Sam suffering bullet wounds, and Kate passing in an almost instant death from a lizard. Kate and Sam made an unbreakable bond that started off as an aquatint relationship. Sam does a few manly chores for Kate in exchange for her special sweet peach jars. The bond they had tightened over time. Then sadly, Kate Barlow lost her beloved Sam to a battle in racism, for he an African-American man, kissed Kate Barlow.
Racism takes many forms and can happen in many places. It includes prejudice, discrimination or hatred directed at someone because of their skin color, culture, ethnicity or national origin. People often associate racism with acts of abuse or harassment. However, it doesnt need to involve violent or intimidating behavior. Take racial name-calling and jokes. Or consider situations when people may be excluded from groups or activities because of where they come from. Nowadays, racism is no longer tolerated where most people no longer use harmful words or actions to discriminate against ones culture or ethnic background, because were all human. But back then, things were different. Back then, if a man was to kiss a white woman, even if it wasnt forceful, the colored man would be punished, this is exactly what happened with Kate and Sam.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee published in 1960. Instantly successful, and gaining the attention of young adults all around the world. It even converted into a movie. To kill a mocking bird is about the innocence taken from a young man. Tom, an African American man, testifies that Mayella, a white lady forcefully comes onto him. On the other hand, Mayella testifies that Tom took advantage of her and severally beat her. It didnt look good for Tom during this time as this was an era where black men and women were discriminated against. Unfortunately, Tom passed away as a result of gunshots, which is the same as what happened to Sam in the novel holes.
In conclusion, racism should no longer be tolerated in any circumstance, whether its about the color of your skin, or your culture you pay great respect to, its never okay to discriminate against ones background or belief. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place during the 1930s, right in the middle of the Great Depression. The story of Kate Barlow and Sam takes place around the 1800s, when the white people were superior to the colored people. Both novels are based along the timeline when black slavery and white people being the superior race existed. As years passed by, our society makes improvements towards minimizing racism. On the other hand, racism is still tolerated. My opinion on racism? For every person living in society, underneath the color of our skin, were all human, and its time for us to treat our peers equally.
