A lot of people have memories of them singing or trying out for some sort of school activity. Mine was trying out for a talent show in first grade. I have been embarrassed many different times, but the worst time was when I sang a song I did not know in front of my entire elementary school.
On the first day of March 2012, I decided to try out for Bensley Elementary School’s talent show. I could not decide what else to do, and at the age of seven, I thought I had a good voice, so I decided to sing. I also did not know very many songs that did not have curse words, so I picked the theme song from one of my childhood favorite TV shows called ‘How to Rock’. In front of the whole school of approximately seven hundred students, I sang a song, the words of which I did not know, and I failed. Therefore, the whole audience was laughing at me uncontrollably, and I dropped to my knees from shock and embarrassment. My first-grade teacher picked me up and carried me to my dads car. The next year I thankfully moved to another city and another school.
I always wondered if the same thing would happen to me again and it did, unfortunately. In fourth grade, at my Wednesday church, I tried out for another type of singing contest called karaoke class. I used an old country song, but I failed at singing because it had the wrong background music added to it. My face suddenly turned red, and as everyone was laughing at me, I thought of having the supervisor say no one would judge me, and I ran away.
In my opinion, dealing with embarrassment is a hard part of growing up, and even adults have to learn to control their nerves. Every time I feel embarrassed now, I think back to the first grade in the talent show at Bensley Elementary, and I start to push the nerves away and smile. It was definitely the most embarrassing moment of my life, like the one that happened during my karaoke class at my Wednesday school. However, I believe that everything that happens happens for a reason. Although this situation made me feel extremely embarrassed, it also made me the strong person that I am today. It helped me control my emotions and nerves. Reflecting on my experience, I no longer feel a sense of anxiety and shame, but rather a sense of gratitude, and a smile appears on my face.
