Animal abuse can happen in many shapes and forms, from starvation to beatings and from cats to horses, animals are always being abused. But unfortunately, it’s not only owners that abuse animals, but shelters too.
And I know some people think animal shelters are places of sunshine and full of happy puppies and kittens ready to meet you, but in fact many pet shelters abuse animals by not caring about them or putting them in small cramped up cages or just warehousing them.
But that doesn’t even scratch the surface of what happens to animals in shelters. The way it works is if the pet doesnt get adopted within 72 hours they need to be put down and sometimes it’s not that peaceful.
There is a quote from the manager of an animal shelter and they said this ‘ First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. and be taken to The Room, when every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. it must smell like death, or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there. Its strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs (depending on their size and how freaked out they are).
Another tech or vet will start the process. They find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of poison. They all dont just go to sleep – sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. When it all ends, your pet’s corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back, with all of the other animals that were killed, waiting to be picked up like garbage.’ That itself shows you how many animals are killed.
In fact, 9 to 11 million pets are killed in shelters every YEAR. Thats a HUGE number just imagine 11 million cats and dogs sitting together. Like, it’s unfathomable, and they are all put down because they’re too ugly or too fat or missing a leg. PLEASE if you want a pet just go to a shelter and adopt a pet there. Now you might think taking one animal’s won’t change the world but just remember you change the whole world from darkness to light for that one animal. There is a quote which I love from a man called Jeremy Bentham and he says about animals ‘the question is NOT, can they reason? NOR, is it can they talk? But, can they SUFFER’
But again thats only shelters a lot of people just abuse animals because of things like peer pressure or just to feel powerful. However, sometimes animals can be sort of be abused without even realizing, for example, if you leave your dog in the yard with his kennel, he may be happy but if it rains the kennel could flood and he would have to get out and sleep in the rain. Or even if you dont put your cat water for a day or two, he/she could look happy and everything but they could be very parched. I want to leave this speech on a light note so now I’m going to inform you that there are ways we can fix this… You’re welcome!
For the two examples I mentioned earlier, just put an alarm to remind you to put your cat water and move your dog’s kennel to under a patio or gazebo or something. Animal killings and abuse in shelters can also be stopped easily too, for example if you want a new pet dont look on gumtree or something, go to a shelter and pick a cat or dog there, or even better choose the scrawniest, ugliest little pet you can find because chances are that its been there for a while (because unfortunately people only want good looking pets) and its going to be put down very soon.
Another way is If you see an animal with a collar that looks extremely hungry or hurt or anything the best thing to do is to just call the police as animal abuse in any shape or form is illegal in almost all parts of the world.
And the last but also very simple way is just to donate to charity. There are many, many, MANY charities to stop animal abuse, a few are the RSPCA, the mercy for animals fund and animals Australia-the voice for animals.
And there are so many people who have a good point of view for this topic for example when Martin Luther King jr says ‘never, never be afraid to do the what’s right especially if the well-being of an animal or person is at stake’.
