Each morning my father would express that it was a new day. To my father, this was a means to slight the conversation of how are you?. To many, this was a mundane answer. Call it what they may, but to me, it was thought-provoking. I gained comfort in the fact that each day was a new chance for me to grow as an individual and shape my future.
There would always be time to discover new commitments; nothing in life was truly permanent. This became a personal affirmation that I chose to live by. Reflecting on my freshman year, my life became an abstract painting, lively and full of many colors. I was consumed by achieving goals that would define the student I was and whom I wanted to become. I prided myself in taking advantage of every new opportunity available to me: I taught elementary school children Spanish, attended mini-medical school lectures at a local hospital, took a photography class, and joined a new sport I knew nothing about.
A strength of mine since adolescence, my curiosity to learn new skills developed throughout the course of this year, yet I still struggled immensely with the thought of my future. In this composition of my life, I soon recognized that beyond the person I perceived to be, I quickly became lost in the colors of my palette. I felt disoriented, unsuccessful, and purposeless. With too many colors on my palette, I was unfit to clearly define the interests I was genuinely passionate about. By the time I started my junior year of high school, I knew I had to funnel down the activities and intellectual curiosities I worked towards to better myself and fulfill meaningful accomplishments that would prepare me for beyond high school. In order to move forward, I had to be honest with myself, but also transform new challenges into opportunities for growth. Ultimately, I began to paint a new vision with a new palette of interests.
I became a student council representative and a yearbook editor, volunteered at organizations I supported, devoted more time to practicing art, and pursued the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program to acquire a well-rounded educational experience. By choosing the palette of my interests more carefully, I was able to explore newfound opportunities and skills that added depth to the person I was becoming. Drawn to art because of its intuitive nature and subjectivity, art has enlightened me that my ideas can manifest by sheer force of will; the same is true of my path in life. Through this time in my life, I was able to successfully determine my greater endeavors, and I discovered the infinite possibilities and absoluteness of biology and chemistry in which I now find solace in.
A dream of mine is to successfully regenerate functional organ tissues from the growth of stem cells and study forms of gene therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. Despite the variance of these compelling topics, art and science now find base in the different aspirations of my life. I realize college will provide me the opportunity to face new educational challenges in an environment that nurtures the concept of diversity and self-growth. Thus said, every day will be a new day spent creating my future.
