Portrait of Basketball as Reality
Playing basketball is an important part of my childhood as it helped me to build character and helped to teach me important life skills. Growing up as a kid my sport of choice was basketball, from the moment I watched my first NBA game as a kid, all I wanted to do was play basketball. A Lot of the skills I learned from my years playing basketball have helped me throughout my life as I have been able to apply these skills I learned to different scenarios outside of the gym. Basketball taught me about teamwork, discipline, and always working hard. I believe basketball is an important part of my life because playing the sport has made me into the person I am today.
Firstly, basketball taught me about hard work, whether it was practice or a game I was always taught to work hard and not to take the easy way out because I would only be cheating myself. Meaning that instead of doing the 20 push-ups or so before practice, I decide to do 10 since no one is looking, but this will only hinder my performance as I will not improve and I may even get worse since I am not used to working as hard. Nothing comes easy in life, no one improves or gets better at anything just by wanting to, the only way to improve is through a lot of hard work. This skill has helped me a lot outside of the gym, whether it’s through work or school I know the only way I will get my desired grade or position/job is through hard work; taking the easy way out by not doing an assignment or not doing my job correctly will only hinder my performance as a student or worker. In other words, basketball helped me learn at a young age that if you want something in life, you gotta work hard every day because theres always someone out there who wants it more and who is willing to work harder, let that person be you.
Secondly, basketball taught me about teamwork, no matter how good one player is on a team, he/she can never win if they don’t work as a team. The only way to win or to reach a mutual goal is to work as a team when you work as a team you learn to rely on one another and completing the mutual goal becomes a lot easier; by working as a team, the load of the work can be spread around the team more evenly. Teamwork is important for any job you get, no matter what job you may end up doing you will more than likely have to work with a team, the better one is at work as a team the easier and more productive the work will be.
Basketball depends heavily on being a team, whether its basketball, work, or school if you’re on a team/group if you don’t work together you will not be productive and will have a difficult time finding success.
Lastly, basketball taught me how to be disciplined, if you did something wrong (missed a shot, open layup, free throw, etc.) or talked out of line you would have to run suicides until you learn your lesson. Suicides are a grueling drill, athletes run suicides by repeatedly sprinting from a starting point to each of a series of lines across the court, and back again. This taught the player to be on their best behavior and to not make little mistakes for fear of running more suicides. Discipline is a very important life skill, without discipline, one will not know how to follow rules or expectations put on them by teachers or by their boss. I am grateful to have learned to be disciplined through playing basketball as I see this skill helping me the most throughout my day-to-day life.
In conclusion, basketball has played a very important role in my life, without basketball I would not have learned how to work as hard or how hard I have to work to achieve what I want, and I would not have learned how to work as well with a team, and I would not have been as disciplined as I am today. Basketball has made me the person I am today and was able to instill a ton of life skills in me.
