Basketball an iconic sport which gathers hundreds of thousands of fans each year in large stadiums while also being the favorite pastime for kids after school. The sport is elegantly simple, two teams of five players each, trying to throw the ball into the basket of their opponent to score points. Its simplicity has allowed basketball to achieve massive prevalence as it can be played virtually anywhere with a basketball and any resemblance of a basket ring. However, the sport is highly technical and requires extreme athleticism. After all, the small basket is mounted 10 feet high and the player must continuously dribble the ball and keep moving, while maintaining minimum contact with others. It is a team sport which calls for great cooperation and balance, strategic gameplay, and the execution of both offensive and defensive plays. Those playing basketball always have room for improvement, ranging from fitness to the various technical elements such as dunk shots, lay-ups, and 3-point jump shots. Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, played in practically every country and having a passionate fan base.
The invention of basketball is credited in 1891 to Dr. James Naismith who was a physical education instructor at the YMCA of what is now known as Springfield College, Massachusetts. At first, the game was created as a method of conditioning for athletes indoors during the winter season. Therefore, the simplicity of basketball was purposeful in its invention since the game had to be easy to pick up but complex enough to remain interesting. It also had to be playable both indoors or on virtually any kind of hard surface while also encompassing athleticism but without the rough contact seen in football or soccer that make it prone to injuries. The game took off in popularity as students at YMCAs and colleges adopted the rules and began playing. By 1905, basketball was universally recognized as a winter sport. The sport was spread throughout the world by YMCAs as well as soldiers in the American Army fighting in World War I. The late 19th century saw formation of early professional and college amateur leagues, and by the early 20th century international tournaments began to be played. Basketball was recognized as an Olympic sport in 1936 and the modern National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed in 1949.
Modern day NBA, starting in the late 20th century and early 21st century began to both commercialize the sport as well as popularize it globally even more. Legends such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille ONeal, and LeBron James became stars of the highest echelon, both as athletes and as commercial entities with significant social influence. The style of basketball has evolved over the years, combined with better available gear and sports science, modern basketball players make the game fast paced and exciting alongside adding flair. Recently, the NBA has surpassed other massively popular sports leagues such as the NFL to become the fan favorite sport in the United States. However, despite its professional and commercial success over the decades, basketball has not lost its origins. In fact, it inspires many kids and young athletes towards participating in the sport. The sport is immensely popular among youth, in schools, and other recreational contexts because of its simplicity, widely available infrastructure (basketball hoops can be found in every neighborhood or school) and engaging, highly competitive nature. It is amazing how a simple game meant for conditioning athletes has become a revolutionary athletic juggernaut of a sport that basketball is today.
