When people think of the word bullying most people think of someone in school getting picked on by a group of kids or one individual, but the real truth is that bullying has been happening for hundreds of years in countless ways. Humans have always felt the need to lower people in some way, shape, or form to make themselves feel better. Sadly what the bullies don’t really think about, or most people for that matter, is the psychological and physical effects it has on that victim. It can dramatically impact a person’s life in countless ways, sometimes even to the point of suicde. Bullying is a terrible thing and needs to be stopped if ever possible, which is why we are finally cracking down on this topic, and the community is helping as a whole. We now have countless anti-bullying programs to help this, and the effect they have had is just the beginning to fixing this issue.
Bullying among teens is one of the biggest and most common problems all school systems face as a whole. This can include physical bullying, emotional bullying, cyberbullying, and sexting, or circulating photos or messages about a person. These teens get stuck in a whole by an individual or group of people and it can emotionally destroy them in the short term or long term. In order to prevent this and help with the problem, schools now offer counselors for any student who may need to speak with someone. Schools now also give many helpful sources which include, anti bullying phone numbers, anonymous messenger to report someone, and extremely harsh punishments to those who bully. Possible as a result of all of this is, according to an article by U.S.news the percentage of students reporting that they’ve been bullied has dropped by more than a third since 2007, according to federal data. This doesn’t mean that the problem is anywhere near solved, but it is a start.
It is terrible to say, but suicide has many times been the outcome for teens that have been bullied. Someone has has been bullied is between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University. There are around 4400 suicides that are teen per year, and around half of these suicides have reasons related to bullying. Due to these terrible numbers there are multiple sucide hotlines an individual can call and though it may help in the moment there is no scientific research in the long run on how much these help. Teens can now call these numbers to talk to someone and find help about whatever situation they are in, which unfortunately have to do with some sort of bullying. These phone numbers have helped countless people find help and saved their lives.
The biggest and best effect that all these programs and attention have given is the decrease in the actual number of people that are bullies. From 2007 to 2015 the percentage dropped 11.1% for people that have reported being bullied. This is probably do to the affect of all the awareness of how terrible of an impact it actually has on human beings, and that we are all the same. With all of these programs also people are finally starting to speak up and telling people about their bully. Now around 43% of bullied students report notifying an adult at school about the event, and 57% of the incidentes stop when a peer gets involved on behalf of the student being bullied.
Bullying has a long history that needs to be stopped. Thankfully now there are many actions someone can take to help these situations, but that doesn’t mean it is gone. Someone can do any of these programs and fix there problem but that doesnt mean its gone for others. The only way we can truly fix the problem is with in us. We as a whole need to know about this and take action even if we see it. No matter how old you are bullying will most likely always be around. Even if you are not a teen or student bullying will always be wrong and uncalled for. We are just at the start for stopping it, but we have come a long way. If rates continue at the rate they are going then hopefully in the future years to come then we can finally say that it has almost stopped, but we have a long way to go and plenty of people to help on the way.
