Introduction

The ongoing pandemic has affected the ordinary lives of many individuals irrespective of economic or socio-cultural backgrounds. People across North America and countries within the European Union have experienced adverse impacts of Covid-19. Unfortunately, I have been a victim of the pandemic, which has affected many aspects (Firang, 2020). My work life changed substantially as my employer was compelled by the authorities to close down the business premises. I have been working at the Western Cigar Company for more than 3 years. The cost of essential commodities rose sharply, making my urban life financially challenging. In addition, this pandemic has affected ordinary social interactions as lockdown regulations, and restrictions of movement characterize this period of hardship. This personal narrative presents a complete analysis of the direct and indirect impacts of Covid-19.

Main body

I have been practically unemployed for several months since the pandemic began. Accessing jobs has been problematic as profit-making entities are running on losses. In essence, my professional lifestyle changed when strict restrictions were put into effect. Moving between economies has been limited as air travel remains closed to reduce the international spread of Covid-19. Nevertheless, digital technology has shifted traditional practices to online platforms (Firang, 2020). Organizations have transformed their operating frameworks to allow remote working. This is to acknowledge that I had several projects done online for global clients. It is during this period that I faced vital challenges against effective delivery. For instance, frequent distractions affected the concentration levels required for completing research tasks. Working from home has helped avoid harmful activities associated with crime. Most importantly, the working model is instrumental for ensuring accuracy and consistency in daily operations continuity.

In addition, I have been affected by economic changes in the prices of essential commodities. It is worth noting that many companies closed after authorities imposed restrictions on movement. Many workers were laid off as businesses could not sustain them for profitability. Consequently, the cost of essential commodities such as food products, sanitary items, and bills becomes unsustainable. This impact has been devastating to individuals with low income earning levels. As a young adult in an advanced economy, digital solutions have helped me avoid unemployments negative impacts (Firang, 2020). For instance, engaging socially for financial gains across social media platforms was a helpful income stream that facilitated basic expenses. The approach has ensured an adequate understanding entailing the influence of internet technology on economic transformation (Firang, 2020). I have gained substantial skills in time management and quality delivery of tasks as a remote employee. These attributes will help secure better employment opportunities after the pandemic.

Moreover, Covid-19 has also affected my social life in significant and notable aspects. For instance, I experienced a long period without accessing religious services or ceremonies. This affected my spiritual lifestyle as I had to engage in modified practices to fill the void. For instance, home worshipping was preferred to communal interactions as the latter would spread the virus fast. Digital technology, nevertheless, has been integral in changing such traditional practices (Firang, 2020). It allows followers of specific faiths to continue with their traditions while focusing on all members well-being (Firang, 2020). The ongoing pandemic requires strict prohibition of gatherings irrespective of their importance. In my residence, some neighbors have complained of the short duration allowed to bury a dead body affected by the virus. The authorities are cautious about the infectious state of a dead body among grieving persons. Most of my friends relatives have succumbed to the disease, and they were restricted from attending the burial.

The ongoing pandemic has also affected my social lifestyle since lockdown and imposed movement restrictions. As a young adult, interacting with peers frequently is helpful for psychological growth. Engaging with friends and classmates in both informal contexts is critical for ensuring stable mental health among children. Covid-19 has affected social interactions at home and schools, as evidenced in both developed and developing nations. Many academic institutions have been closed to reduce the spread of the virus in educational facilities. I have been affected by this limitation which was contrary before the pandemic (Firang, 2020). For instance, we used to organize birthday and wedding celebrations for relatives and close friends. I attended many social places, including sports events which improved my mental well-being. However, the pandemic has resulted in increased stress levels leading to depression. In extreme cases, economic challenges in meeting basic needs have resulted in suicide cases.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the ongoing pandemic has direct and indirect social and economic impacts on individuals everyday lifestyles. I lost my income-earning sources as the employer could no longer sustain employees financial needs. The cost of essential commodities has increased significantly, making it difficult to afford basic needs, including decent shelters, food, and clothing. The affordability of secondary needs has also decreased due to a lack of employment opportunities. Moreover, Covid-19 restrictions have affected traditional practices in worshiping among individuals. The authorities have forced religious institutions to close as cases of the pandemic rise sharply. This has affected social interactions previously enjoyed at school and home for children. Long periods without visiting remote family relatives have involved family bonds at distinct levels.
