Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.-John Dewey
Education has always been an integral part of the development of an individual, its what makes one stand out and gives them an identity of their own but, is an individuals development restricted to academics?
In India, we see the mindset most have is; the limit of education is drawn at the line of academics the idea of groundwork, for gaining practical knowledge, is not taken into serious consideration. This has impacted students overall development. But, the truth is education has a considerably broader aspect than we know, From the very beginning our way of thinking has mainly focused on getting good grades and well-paid jobs, rather than being creative and standing out from the rest.
There is a need for practical exposure in colleges and institutes, so students can experience the actual working of an industry. For example, taking a student to a manufacturing firm will give him/her real insight and a better understanding of how an industry works. In order to bring about this change, most professional colleges Business schools, for instance, have started providing practical exposure to students through regular guest lectures, industrial visits, conferences, seminars, cultural festivals, and so on, this idea of learning is also seen in a lot of other fields of education.
Co-curricular activities that take place outside the classroom, but reinforce classroom curriculum, in some way, have become the main topic of discussion today. These activities help in the enhancement of an individual, in a lot of ways. Involvement in such activities helps one to grow mentally, socially, and individually. The intellectual development of a student is shown in the classroom, but for the overall holistic development such as team-building, character-building, and physical growth, Students must step out and have an insight into the world outside of a classroom for instance, a student learns the skill of team-work and coordination through a certain sport such as basketball or football in a practical manner, which is not something that cannot be taught in the class.
Classroom teaching provides the foundation, and co-curricular or extracurricular activities provide practical exposure and opportunities to implement what students learn in the classrooms. This helps in developing the overall personality of the students, inculcating various soft skills in them, which otherwise are difficult to teach. Clearly, life beyond academics creates creative and empowered professionals.
It goes without saying that education is not the knowledge one inculcates in his/her own mind but the one who grasps the knowledge of respectable fields whether in their own interest or not. With this insight why dont we try to jump out of our comfort zone and try something like never before irrespective of a students or not? As John Dewey above stated Education is not preparation for life education is life itself
