I have over twenty years of experience working as a teacher in Pakistan, with increasing positions of responsibility in overseeing teaching and learning in the Department of Maths and English. I have always prided myself in leading by example and have pursued my personal development in ensuring that teaching and learning have always been minimally good to outstanding. Teachers play a major role in ensuring that pupils get the best start in life. Hence, I want to pursue my career as a teacher and facilitator in the field of education.
I have completed a Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Pakistan which involved classroom-based experience in primary education. This is where I developed techniques that improved the efficiency of learning by pre-assessing student abilities and differentiating between different teaching techniques to create a classroom environment conducive to learning. As a part of my degree, I have studied psychology which involved learning about human development, development of language, and mental processes. This understanding allowed me to communicate with my pupils effectively and create an open safe environment where pupils can openly express themselves and nourish their learning.
My experience as a teacher allowed me to develop a whole range of resources to support and develop students in their learning. I undertook the responsibility of ensuring that all students were included in learning irrespective of their abilities. Although I did encounter some resistance from other staff I was able to increase awareness of teaching using differentiated activities. This had a huge impact on improving the performance of students in English for the classes that I took. I also led a team of teachers who were able to plan and teach engaging lessons.
As resources were scarce, I used my initiative and creative skills to maximize motivation and keep pupils engaged in the work. I adopted a student-centered teaching style by encouraging my pupils to ask questions and develop skills to find answers through exploration as it allows them to develop a deeper understanding of the topics compared to simply memorizing facts.
In 2002, I was appointed as a headteacher for a small independent school. As I liaised with senior colleagues and governors to formulate the overall aims and objectives for the school and policies for its implementation, I came to appreciate the importance of communication. To make the school more inclusive, I scheduled progressive meetings with parents of EAL and SEN pupils to focus on pupil attainment. This reaped great results and ensured that every pupil was offered individualized support in their learning. As a result, we achieved very good results. I have encountered several challenges in dealing with whole school behavior. I have always ensured a fair but firm code of practice. This has allowed our school to maintain high standards.
Recently, I have been volunteering in Year 2 and Year 3 of Cuxton Primary School. My role involves working with the class teacher to get the classroom ready, listen to pupils read, and provide extra support to children who may require it. I have noticed a contrast between the teaching styles used in Pakistan compared to the United Kingdom. This role has allowed me to gain a better understanding of the national curriculum along with reflecting and trying on different teaching styles. During one of the lessons, I observed how the teacher used to praise good behavior. This encouraged all the students to behave nicely as they all wanted to be praised.
Being a mother of two beautiful daughters, I have had to take breaks in my career to focus on my family. Even during the career breaks, I still tutored children from infants up to SATs, which allowed me to keep my knowledge up to date. However, now that both of my daughters have gone to university, it is time for me to return to the profession I have committed my life to.
Having worked as a teacher, Ive come to appreciate how challenging and demanding this career path can be, especially since the job does not end with the school day. However, the reward of being able to make a difference deserves my dedication and determination. I look forward to having a job that allows me to nurture the minds of children, so they develop critical thinking skills and make positive contributions to society.
