Remember the Titans Leadership Styles Now that you have had a chance to watch Remember the Titans, please take a few minutes to reflect on the different leadership styles that were portrayed in the movie. Reflect on the leadership differences between the two coaches Herman Boone and Bill Yoast. Please be specific in using the different terms of leadership that we talked about in class authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire.
Both Herman Boone and Bill Yoast were for the most part authoritarian, however, Yoast mixed a style of servant style within his management in order to better motivate certain players. Boone in my opinion was the more charismatic of the two, for the football players, both of the coaches enhanced the team, and because the players understood why and where the caches were coming from both of their styles in tandem helped raise the Titans up to where they had stood in the movie.
Was there an example in the movie when a decision had to be made and the steps of making a rational decision could have been used? Be specific. When Rev broke his finger (and/or wrist) after getting tackled, Coach Yoast identified the problem and quickly determined Sunshine to be the replacement. Here we see both the servant and authoritative style of leadership, first telling Sunshine to go out in the fields. He first tells him not to let the team move another year’s ads, and places demands but encourages Sunshine to get out there.
His leadership and decision-making were quite a success, as Sunshine had completely changed the tides of the games with the help of his team, and his quick thinking.
- Step 1: Identify and define the problem: He saw that Rev was injured and could not play to his best.
- Step 2: Identify the decision criteria: He determined they needed a quarterback who could view the fields and work with the players in order to win the game.
- Step 4: Generate a list of alternatives: He could have left Rev to play (though injured and tired), looked at his roster, and could use Sunshine to replace Rev with Sunshine.
- Step 5: Evaluate the alternatives: Keeping Rev in the game was completely unreasonable and as such Sunshine was his best option, he chose Sunshine to play as the quarterback.
- Step 6: Determining the optimal decision: He had chosen Sunshine as the quarterback, but made sure he knew what he needed to do, and was placed on an optimum amount of pressure to perform well.
