Through the definition of Sociological Imagination, we can derive that, from our personal troubles we can look at our situations more broadly and be able to counter them. When more people or people at a larger scale experience the same trouble, we begin to view it as a social issue. As such, the influence on how we use our Sociological Imagination is centered around history, biography, and social structure. In this text, the focus will be on viewing personal trouble in my own life and using Sociological Imagination to detail it as a social issue.
Connecting personal troubles with social issues is made possible by having a larger imagination in questioning what others may or may not be facing in their lives. Sociological Imagination is the ability to learn from experiences rather than looking at issues from a societal perspective. Society perceives issues from a shared belief system and cultural ideas, not taking into note other factors that form a vivid aspect of an issue.
Experiences of people differ based on factors such as, namely, sex, Racial ethnic identity, Socioeconomic Status, and the state of health of the person. A social issue has its uniqueness when viewed as personal trouble because it is influenced by a different environment compared to another individual. C. Wright Mills takes great note of history, biography, and social structure. What we have been taught at an earlier stage serves as a barrier to helping us develop into our modern selves. Tradition, cultural values, and belief systems have impacts on our behavior and social interaction, which also shape us to deal with troubles differently.
Wide society sees Obesity as a state one can just come out of at an instance, but that is not the case. Obesity may occur as an inheritance pattern caused by changes in the genes of parents and affects offspring. I think it is safe to say some people are born that way, but looking at our nation, how many ‘Healthy living restaurants’ are there? We have a smaller sphere of influence when it comes to healthy living and eating. If you get hungry while at the mall what other restaurant to eat in either than the likes of, KFC, McDonald’s, Burger King, etc? On the other hand, as a University student, the only way you can eat a healthy meal is by cooking it yourself, and in most cases that won’t happen as we see convenience in our online food ordering apps. Eating unhealthy food, even in the smallest quantities may lead to Obesity.
Isn’t it clear that no one would like to be overweight? To have a reduced ability to run, over sweat from a small walk, or have increased breathing from a minor activity. There is more than meets the eye, which all leads to stress and depression in people in this state. An individual could go to the gym and change her diet, but from a social scope, it has to be more than just that. The country should come into the picture of how healthy living can be obtained as a society. Support and dignity go a long way in viewing people from our perspective and it all constitutes making us better people. This concludes, ‘ By using one’s Sociological Imagination you can look at issues that you previously may have taken for granted uniquely’. (Mills. 1959)
