Introduction
The aim and reasoning of this report relate to and is to determine whether life can be held on the moon by research and knowledge. It will discuss the necessary information that evolves around the topic (can we live on the moon). This assignment will focus on the essentials of life as well. We would consider living on the moon for many reasons. There are six main essentials that living organisms require for life. Earth is the only sustainable planet in the solar system to have life as it has all of the essentials that living organisms need to survive. The things living organisms rely on for survival are carbon dioxide, oxygen, water, food, shelter, and sunlight. Earth contains the oxygen that we require to breathe, water that we must have to rehydrate, shelter that we need for protection, food that we must eat for energy, and sunlight for its energy that passes to plants (plants are the producers of food chains and webs), the carbon dioxide that we depend upon to help trap the heat of our atmosphere. Living on the moon would be very different from living on earth in so many ways. One difference between the earth and the moon is that the moon is in the cable to provide life without advanced adjustments, and developments designed by human inventions whereas the earth is already fit for life. Other differences may include the gravitational pull, the size difference, and that the moon is only a satellite and the earth is a planet.
Oxygen
We need oxygen for survival; it is essential to living organisms. We require oxygen as we need it to release energy in our cells from food during cellular respiration. There is no breathable air on the moon, but the lunar crust is approximately forty percent oxygen by mass. Lots of NASA scientists have hypothesized and experimented that it is possible to extract oxygen. To extract the oxygen from the lunar crust you heat the crust to extremely high temperatures cause it to gaseous oxygen to arise. Because the moon has no atmosphere, the air will hardly stay in the moons area. We could just always wear space suits as they can hold oxygen for certain amounts of time. We would have to continuously transport earth’s oxygen to the moon.
Carbon dioxide
On earth, carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas as it keeps all of the atmosphere heat trapped. If on earth there was no carbon dioxide, the earth would be inhospitably cold. Carbon dioxide comes from living organisms. Living organisms breathe carbon dioxide out in cell respiration. This can include rotting and burning fossil fuels. On the moon, there is little carbon dioxide. We breathe out carbon dioxide constantly and that will only acutely stay on the moon as there is no atmosphere. So, there is no way to breathe out enough carbon dioxide for the trees, plants, etc. Humans do not require carbon dioxide on the moon, so it is unrequired.
Water
Water is required for living organisms survival. We need it as water is in cells, organs, and, tissues to regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. We sweat, breathe, and digest and that is when we lose water in our system so we must rehydrate. We get water constantly and will not run out of water because of the water cycle. The water cycle is the process of when water evaporating into the air from the warmth, condensation is when the temperature cools and the water particles form back together on an object, then there is precipitation where the water particles form back together in the air and create water again, then there is the collection stage where the waterfalls in the lakes, oceans, dams, and other water areas. A predicament for water bottles on the moon is that we cannot decompose them as they never completely break down. A solution to plastic water bottles that are better for our new environment would be to use seaweed to wrap our water in as a container and then eat it as it is an edible material or bring recyclable water bottles that get collected continuously. Another problem is that there is no water on the moon. We can transport water in seaweed pouches/water bottles to the moon for our water.
Sunlight
We need a source of energy that comes from food to live. We eat other organisms and plants. We need food as a source of energy. Without it, we would not live. We get food from the food chain/web. The energy from the sun gives the energy that it generates to plants.; this is the process of photosynthesis. When this happens there grows a plant which is a producer. Animals (first consumers) eat the plant that has grown and receive that plant’s energy. Then other animals (secondary consumers) eat that animal, etc. Because there is always the sun to create and grow plants there will always be a food chain/web that is endless on earth. But there are a few problems. That we do not have the things that plants require as plants need carbon dioxide to survive. Carbon dioxide does not stay on the moon as there is no atmosphere on the moon. So, we could continually transport food to the moon from the earth. We can wrap the food that is brought to the moon in seaweed (like with the water pouches/water bottles) for recyclability reasons to keep the moon a healthy and unlittered environment. We will have to cut certain foods on the moon that might be too messy to consume due to the gravity of the moon. We may have to cut foods as well that do not stay in an edible condition for example off or non-best-before foods.
Shelter
On earth, all the main reasons we would need shelter would be for protection from the acute effects of radiation, a safe. Comforted resting place, personal privacy, an area to do things, and, protection from the weather. Whereas on the moon we would only need shelter on the moon would be for protection from radiation, personal privacy, an area to do stuff, and a resting place. You can create shelter on earth with rocks, soil, sand, water, trees, grasses, plants, caves, holes, cliffs, overhangs, branches, and more. You can make shelters in various ways and you can make shelters with a variety of materials on earth. There is only one acute dilemma we do not have any of the materials we need to create a good shelter. There is a simple solution which is to bring all of the necessary materials required to make.
Sunlight
Living organisms require sunlight as it provides energy and passes it to living organisms; this is the process of photosynthesis. The sun generates energy in its core in a process called nuclear fusion. The sun gives and provides energy to all plants, trees, animals, and all living organisms. Without the sun on earth, we would all starve as there would be no producers to provide food for all of the consumers. Living organisms get advantages from sunlight as it can give our bodies vitamin D. The sun’s UV rays helps and improves your bodys nutrient, which is good for your blood cells, your immune system, and your bones and it can benefit you taking in lots of minerals for example phosphorus and calcium. The sun is positioned and located on the outer rim of the Orion Arm. All the planets in the solar system orbit the sun, including earth. When the earth is orbiting the sun, it is also rotating. Because Earth is rotating the sun if you are standing in the same spot you can only see the sun half of a day (12 hours roughly). On Earth, we would see darkness with a little bit of light from the moon reflecting the sun’s light and energy. If we were on the moon, we would see the sun all of the time from different spots on the moon. The only time you cannot see any sun at all would be on a complete lunar eclipse as the sun will block out the entire sun. So, every other time there is no lunar eclipse you will see some or all of the sun. On the moon, there would be one or two main problems with the sunlight. One of them is that we may find it difficult to rest during our normal rest time as some people rely on the sunset to know when to go to sleep. We can fix this problem with shelter as it can block out some of the sunlight. My second complication is that our bodies are affected slightly by the blasts of radiation from the sun. Radiation is the energy of unstable atoms in the structure of electromagnetic waves or photons. Radiation can cause effects such as skin burns, radiation syndrome, cancers, and cardiovascular disease. We can wear radiation protection suits which would block and prevent radiation effects and we can stay in our shelter, although the shelter can only partially prevent and restrict radiation effects.
Expense
The expense of bringing everything required to the moon with continuous transportation for water, food, shelter, and equipment for specific and certain reasons would be extremely expensive as we need the rocket to be in good condition and we would need lots of fuel. Going to the moon is expensive because they need money and materials to create the rockets, engine, nose cone, fins, and rocket body. Living on the moon would be as expensive as one average and the normal trip would cost approximately could cost $30 billion dollars. Going to the moon is expensive because they need money and materials to create the rockets, engine, nose cone, fins, and rocket body. It is estimated to costs $7.35 billion for an annual operation with a lunar base. It would also potentially cost $5.9 billion dollars for transport and to keep food growing for a single adult human being, as a human need roughly 800, 000 calories a year to survive. The cost of water for a single adult human being would closely be about $43 billion dollars as humans require 10.6 tons of water yearly. The cost for air and power would be $1.5 billion dollars as it needs to be transported and assembled. It relatively costs $57.8 billion dollars in total to live on the moon for a year.
Conclusion
From this report and research, it is possible to live on the moon as we have all of the main essentials that living organisms need for life. Water, food, shelter, oxygen, and sunlight are on the moon if we improvise. If we improvise the dilemmas and problems that occur it can be fixed. But if we were to be realistic with the expense to go to the moon it is extremely unlikely to receive the money to be able to live on the moon permanently and it would take a lot of productive and progressive work toward it. We would also need people on earth to make all of the required things that we need to be transported to the moon. Living on the moon would change ourselves, and especially our lifestyles on the earth compared to the moon drastically. In conclusion, if we had the money to live on the moon it would be possible although it is inconvenient to have our needs transported continuously.
