Invented by James Naismith on December 1, 1891, at the International Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) Training School, Basketball is a team sport played by ten players, 5 per team. The goal of the game is to shoot the ball through the hoop. That hoop is elevated 10 feet above the court. Once a basket is made, the team can score either two or three points. After, the other side will get the chance to shoot the ball through the opposite basket on the other end of the court. The ball moves up and down the 94-foot court by passing and dribbling. After a long, but fun forty minutes, the team with the most points becomes the winner of the game.
Basketball has been a crucial part of my life for over ten years. For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of playing college basketball at a Division 1 school. After college, I want to play professionally in the WNBA. Basketball has always been a place where I can go to get away from everything. I consider it my break from life, just me and the basket. Thankfully, I was born into a very athletic family that pushes me every day to improve my skills and to be the best player that I know, and they know I can be. My family is very well known in the sports industry, and although that comes with a lot of pressure, it also means I always have people there to help me reach my goal of where I want to go, and because of that, I strive to be just like them one day.
The mathematics that we do not see in basketball involves topics such as geometry and percentages. The geometry that we see in basketball is shown through the dimensions of the court, basket, and ball. The diameter of a standard basketball hoop is around 18 inches. Every age group has a different-sized basketball, but the standard diameter of an average basketball is about 9.4 inches. As for the court itself, the width is around 50 feet, and the length from the three-point line to the hoop is about 19 feet.
Everyone has a different way of shooting the ball. People use different types of angles to get the ball to go through the hoop. Based on the distance you are away from the circle, will affect the angle or push you would put on your shot. Shooting the perfect textbook shot would involve getting the ideal arc on your shot. The arch helps increase the chances of the ball going through the basket. Passing the ball is another time we see angles shown on the court. Depending on the distance of your pass, you have to adjust the positioning of your arm at either an acute or straight angle to achieve the perfect pass.
Statistics are essential to the game of basketball. They are used to determine a players value and skill set. Coaches use statistics to determine the performance of an entire team. We see percentages are used to calculate the predicted outcome for a persons performance in a game. They are used in rebound rate, free throw percentage, the predicted fouls a player may have during a game, and the list goes on. Statistics are also seen being used to rank a player based on their production during a series of games. Related to statistics, averages are used to get efficacy like average players’ points per game. Ratios are often used to get turnover to assist the rate that a player might have.
There is math involved in every little thing that we do, no matter what it may be. Growing up, I watched a lot of kids’ shows that tried to make math more fun for those at a young age, and they did mention many times that those in sports use math every day, but it just may be hard to realize. I was mostly caught off guard by the amount of math involved in the sport of basketball, but as I continued to research, I began to learn more and more about the game I love. As I have continued to improve my skills in basketball, I have heard from many coaches that the perfect shot has to do with using the correct angles. Although I never understood what they meant, now I completely understand. The angle and arc that we use to shoot the ball have a drastic effect on the outcome of the shot taken. Learning about the math involved in something that you love or something that you do every day can help you understand a topic and or action more than you thought you ever could.
