Communication and its skills play an important part in our lives. For information to be passed from one person to the other, communication is needed. There are two types of communication namely, verbal and nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is the transmission of messages or signals through a nonverbal platform such as eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, posture, and the distance between two individuals and verbal communication is the use of words to communicate, and communication can take place via written or spoken.
Verbal communication
Verbal communication serves as a vehicle for people to express their opinions and wishes verbally. People who use verbal communication can draw someones attention to themselves and influence them. P. Golu stated three forms of verbal communication namely; simple verbal communication, persuasion, and suggestion and he also stated that all this forms are important to teachers and should be taken into account. Very good verbal communication is vital to sustaining fruitful relationships between a teacher and a learner. Effective verbal communication between colleagues brings a good positive influence to learners and it makes teachers satisfied with their jobs as the school will be full of a positive environment which will lead to very active learning and teaching activities that bring good academic results. Good proper communication between group and team brings out good results for instance, if there is a project that needs to be done at school and its due in a few weeks, if teachers communicate with others and cooperate, the project will be complete soon. Verbal communication brings job satisfaction between colleagues, through good work, good feedback from other people, and good advice, teachers will feel empowered and that spirit will work positively in class. Good verbal communication between a teacher and learner helps to build learners’ confidence self-esteem, and self-development, however, all a learner alone cannot achieve all by themselves, and they need teachers to help them. Good verbal communication helps learners build positive personalities and positive personalities in class make learners more confident about their academics and they start producing good results.
Nonverbal communication
Non-verbal communication is communication using body language such as gestures, facial expressions, body postures, and eye contact. Those messages include body language such as gesture, facial expressions, eye contact and body posture. Nonverbal communication is important in bringing out good results at school in many ways. Firstly, non-verbal communication helps build a learners confidence and feel so good about themselves. For example, when a teacher communicates with a learner using nonverbal communication, the teacher focuses and pays more attention to the learners gesture, body posture, and facial expression, and with all the attention given to the learner, a learner feels more special about themselves and they start working hard on their school work which at the end brings good result. Secondly, nonverbal communication improves learners’ concentration and helps them ignore distractions, For instance, in a classroom when a learner or teacher passes information using nonverbal communication, everyone is obliged to look at the person and focus on what they are saying them to get the message, this helps a learner be more focused and grab more important information that helps a learner to pass. Thirdly, nonverbal communication builds a positive relationship between a teacher and a learner, when they are used to communicating nonverbally, they get used to each others faces and start feeling comfortable with one another, and that makes things easy for the learner to participate in class and ask a question to enhance their knowledge.
Non-verbal communication is also important in bringing good results between teachers. For example, many people tend to lose focus and concentration in their workplace, but communicating nonverbally requires a persons full attention, and that makes a teacher more vigilant with their work, and that makes them always give learners work in time and they will never be left behind.
