An important event in my life was when I moved back to my farm in a new house. Before this event, I lived at the farm until our house burned down when I was somewhere around five. In between my house burning down and moving back to the farm in the new house that was built, I lived with my grandma, in Caldwell, and then in a camper. Life was not bad by any means but moving around kind of got hard sometimes. When we lived with my grandma and in Caldwell, my parents had to drive me to Shenandoah every day, and I didn’t ride the bus. When we moved out of Caldwell we moved back to our farm but only in a camper, we lived in that until we got a house. Once we got the house, and moved it to the farm, we immediately moved in, but in the house we did not have running water but we had heat and air-conditioning. Now we live at the farm in our house. Just like my life, Bergin-Belson had a big event but also had events before and after that important event. Even though Bergin-Belson is known for its time during the holocaust it also had a purpose before it was a concentration camp.
Bergin-Belson just like everything else has its own unique history. Begin-Belson was built in 1940. Before the Holocaust, the concentration camp was a prisoner of war camp for French and Belgium prisoners in 1940. In 1941, it was renamed Stalag 311 and housed about 20,000 Russian prisoners. Even though the Holocaust started in 1941, Bergin-Belson did not become a concentration camp until 1943. However, the prisoner-of-war portion of the camp was in function until 1945. Bergin-Belson also had a purpose even before the Holocaust.
Although Bergin-Belson had more purposes it’s still mainly known for its part in the Holocaust. After the holocaust had started and Jews started to be transported to begin-Belson, the camp had Jewish people from all around the world. Life in Bergin-Belson was not as easy as life is today, once morning came and it was time for the Jews to begin working, if they didn’t get up from being sick, tired, or hungry they would be killed. Once the Jews woke up their breakfast was maybe a piece of bread, for lunch they had watery soup that was made from the leftover peeling from the German officer’s lunch. Most died at Bergen-Belsen from being shot, hung, starved to death, or killed by disease. By the time the holocaust ended somewhere around, 5,000 ended up being killed at the beginning of Belson, Anne Frank being one of the five thousand. Although a lot of people are aware of everything that happened in bergin-belson during this time people forget to think about where the camp is today.
