I was born in Jalisco, Mexico on a small ranch called Manalisco, Jalisco. As Mexico innovated throughout the years, the small ranch transitioned into a village (Pueblo). I was born into a family of 9 siblings. I was full of joy and amusement growing up, I remember playing every day on the ranch with pure bliss. The ranch was quite a site to see, it was full of rich soil, grass, trees, nopal trees, and corn stock. However, there were sections of our land that were dry, full of dirt, muddy, and filled with dried bushes. When I was six years old, I was playing with two of my siblings near these large boulders surrounded by a mix of dried and green grass. It was just a sudden that I was stung by a scorpion. I felt pain around the area I was stung, my vision began to blur, it was difficult to breathe, and my body began to get numb. I dont quite remember how it happened, what I do remember was that I woke up inside our home with all my family around me. Everyone believed I was going to die. Fortunately, I woke up and regained consciousness.
My parents believed that God had given me another opportunity to live and was eternally grateful that I survived. After a few years went by, I moved to Mezcala, Jalisco when I turned ten years old. It was difficult for me since I had to move with my father and five of my siblings to this new village. For that reason, I cried a lot because my mother stayed with my other siblings at the ranch. I felt as if Id been separated for an eternity, even though it had just been a few days. Two weeks later, when my father and I finally settled in our new home, he was able to reconnect my mother and my other siblings with us. When I turned eleven years old, I started working at home every day. After school, I would walk home and begin making tortillas to sell and feed my siblings. My passage to school was remarkably long, I would have to walk through the countryside that would coincide with rivers and forests. Throughout the years, these paths have been marked and developed by local villagers in order to create safe passages for the rest of the local villagers to reach their destinations.
I reminisce about the times when I would visit this boy I liked so much. Every month, my family and I would walk to our old ranch to visit some of our family there. Throughout our voyage, we would cross a river the water temperature would fluctuate from warm to freezing cold. After, we would come across these glazing mountains that would steer danger between rocks and boulders that would fall from time to time. Thankfully, nature has always been kind and we would always have a safe journey. Mother nature is beautiful, yet unforgiving. There was a moment in my life when I arrived at our old ranch and I went looking for the boy I liked. It was a dark and cloudy day; the rain was heavily approaching us. It had struck me like a painful nerve that I had received news that the boy I liked was killed by a lightning strike. Its one of those unrealistic feelings that are complex to comprehend between truth and myth. I never understood how it was possible for someone to be struck by lightning. However, as I learned in school, I believed it had a lot to do with the environment he was in. The local report stated that the cause of death was due to ground current. It was said that the lightning struck a nearby tree and much of its energy had traveled along the ground surface where the body was found. The thing I miss most about growing up was that I had to leave the ranch I was born to start a new life in Mezcala. My life and happiness lay in Manalisco.
I knew that the life of a ranch girl was over, and I had to transition my life as a villager. Years after, I got married at the age of fifteen and had three beautiful kids. My marriage was a failure, it was difficult since the man I married was chauvinist and abusive. I was forbidden to see my parents and my kids to see their grandparents. One day I had enough, I took my three kids to my parents home and begged my father to protect my kids. My father drove my ex-husband away, and my father yelled If I see you anywhere near my property or daughter, I will shoot you!. From that day on, my life would change forever. One of the most difficult decisions I had to make was to leave my three kids with my grandparents in order to make my journey to the United States. Favorably, my journey was not harsh; yet it was easy to cross the border. During the 80s, I passed the US border by being hidden on the back of a pickup truck between sacks of produce. Therefore, I was able to cross and begin a new life in the United States. Once it was safe to get up, I vividly remember the first time I saw the United States. The landscape was significantly different from where I was raised, I noticed that there was human infrastructure starting from the roads, restaurants, and stores. Everything appeared to be more man-made rather than natural. There were plants, grass, and trees planted along the shopping centers. At the time, I found it bizarre since I was used to living in a natural landscape where the trees, plants, and rivers would flow naturally. While on the route, I saw the ocean for the first time. I could see the waves coming in and out of the shore, the large body of salt water mesmerized me with its mixture of blue, grey, and green colors. I could see its fascinating endless life force that lies upon mysteries within. its amazing to know that theyre powerful, and still so alluring. The first song I remember was listening to The Eagles Hotel California as I drove towards my destination where I would settle in an urban mixed suburban city called Santa Ana, California.
The most memorable moment was when my mom arrived in the United States with my kids. I knew from that moment my kids were safe and I would be able to give them the opportunity for them to pursue the American dream. My mother has been the most important person in my life, she took care of my siblings and me during harsh times, she helped me overcome my first marriage, and she looked after my children as if they were her own. My mother loved to play poker, the lottery, play jokes, and pranks; and when I put it in perspective, shes a near reflection of myself. In 1987, I met the man I would spend the rest of my life with. Prior to getting married, he made his journey back to my village Mezcala, Jalisco to seek my parents blessing to approve our marriage. When he made his safe return, I asked him if there were any differences or features that he noticed differently. He responded At night, you can see the stars. When the rain and thunder are approaching, you can see its lightning out in the dark sky. Everything seems so natural; the aroma of the landscape is rich and you can smell the grass and soil. I remember commenting to him that these are two different worlds, the United States is more structured, and the majority of its areas are architecturally designed Mezcala, Jalisco where the landscape is covered in grass and trees that can be seen from endless miles. A few years later, I had another three beautiful kids. The most important life lesson in life is that Ive learned to value my work and help others on my own behalf. Ive learned to read and write in English. Hence, Ive been able to mentor my six children and provide them with the necessary tools as best as I could. My mother once told me Always look forward, and never look back and Never let anyone bring you down. For that reason, Ive never regretted any of my actions in the past and Ive braced myself for what the future lies ahead.
