People have adopted various ways of doing things in order to satisfy their needs in the modern world. This has led to the adoption of modern technology in the process of production in various activities. Human beings continue to invent and innovate various ways of doing things to ensure they arrive at the most suitable way of production that saves time, money and energy (Lane 37). This discussion explores the impacts associated with the use of modern technology in interpersonal communication.
Technology is defined as a way of doing things and it involves the use of machines and other gadgets in order to achieve efficiency in any production process. Communication is the exchange of information and ideas among people from different parts of the world. Technology has had positive impacts in communication in various ways.
First, it has led to the production of quality work that has enhanced human communication within and outside organizations. The use of computers, printers and photocopying machines have led to the production of high quality work as far as typing, printing and photocopying are concerned.
Interpersonal communication involves sharing information that may not be relevant to the parties concerned and this may lead to ambiguity of the message send but the use of technology ensures that the sender sticks to the subject of discussion. Secondly, technology has enabled production of huge volumes of work due to the fact that machines are not programmed like people and can be set to do more work compared to human beings that have limited output capacity.
It has enabled people to save time since machines are able to work very fast and produce quality work within a short time. Lastly technology saves human energy and enables people to multi task. However, despite the many advantages associated with modern technology in interpersonal communication it has led to the loss of contact among human beings (Floyd 21).
This compromises the credibility of the message hence reducing chances of extracting useful information that is usually gained through how the message is presented. It has led to the loss of credibility on the source of information since computers have made it easy for people to copy and paste other peoples work.
This has threatened the security of information send through the internet as cases of cyber crimes continue to rise. Most machines used for communication like mobile phones and computers are expensive and not all people have access to them. It is expensive to communicate using some modern technologies compared to interpersonal communication (Wood 22).
This encourages discrimination against people who can not access them and thus bars them from accessing relevant information. Furthermore, the use of these technologies requires an individual to train on how to use them and this may take time due to the complications in comprehending the instructions on their user manuals.
Interpersonal communication involves the use of sign language that enables messages to be effectively delivered but technology does not have this provision and this limits the chances of passing the intended meanings to the receiver.
The use of technology in communication has improved the quality and quantity of communication and promoted human relations in the society. However, if technology is not properly used it may lead to damaging consequences if the message being send contains sensitive or confidential information. The use of technology should be approached carefully after ensuring that all security measures have been followed.
