Moments in a persons life will largely affect ones mental growth at some point, and I, like many others have learned from it. The hard-working woman I am today is only because of how I was raised. Through yearly family gatherings, my views on the world have been shaped and allowed me to grow into the strong person I am today.
Although I was raised in the small town of Texarkana, an important part of my upbringing happened in Lubbock, Texas. It began as a tradition. Once a year my family would pack up their bags and take a week-long vacation to visit my fathers side of the family. Because they live so far away its a rare occasion that the opportunity arises for us to see each more than once a year. For as long as I can remember this trip was something to look forward too, and there a certain aspect that never failed to spark my excitement. Its the gathering of all my family members to spend time together, commonly known as family game night. We would spend hours awaiting night time to come so we can begin, and it was something we upheld almost religiously.
My family would gather around the table and bring out the boxes of board games that were stored in the cabinets. The fresh scent of pumpkin bread filled the air, while we argued over which activity to play tonight, and waited for the rest of my family to arrive. Through these small moments I was shown the importance of keeping in touch with your family members, and received a glance at the hard work that was put in to make these nights happen. One of my favorite games to play is card games. I learned many skills through them, and one of the most important things they taught me were how to multitask and work together as a team. These nights show an unexpected importance in my life and has helped me become good at teamwork, being able to work problems through, and given me a chance to become a better person.
These trips have always been held dearly in my heart, they fueled my knowledge and helped me outgrow my shell. The games were never meaningless fun to pass the time, and they were well worth the long drive. A foundation of comfort and trust were laid upon us, and helped shaped the person I am proud to be today. Because of these nights I was given the tools I need to thrive in life and I will continue to uphold these lessons every day.
