Introduction

Lack of sleep affects your work ethic in school. Most people dont realize now that without the proper rest your brain cant function to its maximum point and your body responds in the same way. Unfortunately the issue of sleep deprived students is too often overlooked and must be addressed more often. Students have trouble regulating their sleep time enduring their performance in school. Some may have after school program or may just typically with social media that they are not keeping track of how much time they have left for rest. After getting less than 5 hours of sleep students wont enough energy to get them through the day.

Teens have a hard time regulating their sleep time which leaves bad outcomes on their education. Not only their academic conduct that is being harmed but also the stress levels, health, and concentration of students. If no action is taken now then society children will grow up following the footsteps of their elders. This study is proof that lack of sleep does affect the academic outcomes of students tremendously. Lack of sleep has also been linked to obesity. With sleep deprivation, there is an increase in the hormone, ghrelin, which is associated with hunger for high calorie foods. There is a decrease in the hormone leptin which reduces appetite. This leads to weight gain in many people. This study supports and agrees with Noland, Heather; Price, James H.; Dake, Joseph; Telljohann, Susan K.(2009) because it shows how and why students are academic incomes are getting the bitter end due to lack of sleep

Literature Review

Studies show that a good night’s sleep improves learning. Whether you’re learning math, how to play the piano, how to perfect your golf swing, or how to drive a car, sleep helps enhance your learning and problem-solving skills. Sleep also helps you pay attention, make decisions, and be creative. Sleep Deprivation roughly affects the way people complete task that involves thinking. Things like studying or memorizing might seem hard but it is because your too tired to think. Students in high school and college suffer from a lot of sleep debt, this makes it tough for them to apprehend anything during class sessions. (Mary. J, (2018). Its worse when a students start school as early as seven in the morning with less than 5 hours of sleep in them. Many researchers have come to the conclusion that great use of social media and gaming time might be the reason students arent getting enough sleep. (Zhang, Meilan; Tillman, Daniel (2017). Sleep is a vital part of your life and it can affect your whole health system. Your body needs a source of energy to function properly. Your mind is the leader of the body, almost like the mastermind so if it off then the whole body is off. If your whole body is off should you expect from your class performance. You cant possibly achieve anything in class if your not energized enough to keep anything in. You need a thorough amount of sleep to survive through a day. Imagine being tired and trying to sit through a almost 2 hour class and comprehend what being discussed. As early that school start a good amount of sleep is needed to process things clearly and focus in school. Adults are probably the most stressful ones of them all so it would be a catastrophe if they didnt get enough sleep their whole mood would change. On top of their job, kids possibly, keeping up with personal payments, and ect lack of sleep would just had more stress on them and they wont be able to keep calm or stay awake.

Research Method

Mixed research method help triangulate our measurement strategyin effect, use different measures of the same concept to provide a more robust overall measure. (Schutt, 2015). A mixed research method that includes qualitative which refers to the meanings, concepts definitions, characteristics, metaphors, symbols, and description of things and quantitative which the uses computational, statistical, and mathematical tools data or methods. This will result in a comprehensive look at the research problem from many perspectives and will offer a more complete picture when analyzing results. (Klassen, Creswell, Plano, Smith, Meissner, 2012). For this research study, Ill be using a mixed research method. Using mixed method gives my research a bigger perspective of the study and helps cover all ground of the research. important to add some elements of one approach to research using another approach (Klassen, Creswell, Plano, Smith, Meissner, 2012).

Materials

For this research study I used my Macbook computer to type my paper and also to create my survey. I used Survey Monkey to put together my survey and used the link from the website to help send out through Facebook and emails. Facebook and Google Gmail was used to send out my survey to highschool students and faculty.

Conclusion

The process of starting my research paper was quite long but I was able to find strong research question to go by. My initial question was whether or not Sleep Deprivation affect the academic improvement of students in urban schools. Nevertheless, I later wanted to reach a broader audience for my topic so I decided to add the perspective of faculty into my paper. Once my research question was complete I went on to start my first draft of my paper.
