What is academic honesty? Is it switching around a few words from another source and claiming it your own? Can it be sharing assignment answers when a fellow student needs help? Some people even think that it is okay to leave uncited sources if they are not obligated to by a teacher or a co-worker. None of these definitions suit the term academic honesty. Academic honesty is holding yourself responsible for every word you write, every thought you have and every piece of information you attain, whether it is a school project or a slideshow at work.
There are so many misconceptions when it comes to what academic honesty entails, some examples stated above; simply interchanging a few words to claim someone else’s work as yours, copying answers, and not giving credit to others’ work. However, submitting papers that were purchased online is also considered plagiarism. Simply because a student owns something does not automatically make it alright for them to take credit for the piece. Would you claim credit for creating the Mona Lisa solely because you owned it? No, you would not, because it is well-known that Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa centuries ago. Similarly, simply because a student owns someone else’s work does not give them the right to claim it as their own.
Having academic honesty is of the utmost importance when having an education. Being academically honest helps students maintain mental health. When a student submits honest work, they do not have to bother about getting detected cheating or plagiarizing, ultimately reducing stress after the assignment is submitted. The student will understand that they are making the right choice and will get credit for their hard work. Academic honesty also helps establish integrity in the workplace, learning how to solve problems independently. When a student copies answers from their peers and gets away with it, they learn that deceit and stealing is the way to go. However, in the real world, adults respect honesty and trustworthiness, two traits that cannot fully be earned by trickery and exploiting people. Our president’s involvement in politics, after all, is a good example of what happens when you get to the top this way. Most people will learn to hate you, and the minority that does trust you will live in fear.
The consequences of plagiarism and cheating can be dire. Both may result in a failing of the assignment. If done repeatedly, it may result in failure of the course taken or permanent expulsion from the school. There will also be a permanent mark on the students record if caught.
