Introduction
This essay will show that the Australian Sporting Culture affects the impact on funding, and this impacts the participation and access of Badminton. To prove this, I will be using stages of Figueroas Framework. The Australian Government has formed peoples attitudes and beliefs towards badminton? Through the funding and support they proved for badminton. Compared to Australia, China focuses greatly on badminton than any other sport. China has an estimate of 100 million human beings taking part in badminton therefore making it a priority for them to build facilities that can accommodate the quantity of people, whereas Australia have 100 thousand, so they do not need as many facilities. In China if you are an athlete that wants to play badminton the Chinese Government pays for your housing, meals and education amenities so that you do no longer have to work, and you can centre your attention on preparing for competitions and taking part in badminton. Whereas in Australia badminton players have to work their training hours around their working hours.
Cricket, swimming and rugby are the most popular sports in Australia. While Chinas main focus is on Badminton, Australia focuses on swimming, rugby and cricket. China number one sport is badminton whereas Australias number one sport is swimming. This year China have over 100 million athletes participating in badminton. In the last three months Australia have had over 6 million people participate in swimming. The reason China thrive in badminton is because the Government pay for the athletes expenses for example housing, food and training facilities so that the athletes do not have to work, and they can focus on training and preparing for competitions. Since Australia value swimming more than badminton because Australian athletes are thriving in the sport the Government pay for more swimming facilities that athletes are able to train in and these facilities can also hold swimming competitions therefore meaning the Government put more toward swimming than badminton.
China is ranked number one in badminton whereas Australia are ranked nineteenth. China focus more on badminton because their athletes thrive in this particular sport, between 1992 and 2016 in the summer Olympics China have won 38 medals. Whereas Australia have only won two medals during this time. Since China are ranked number one for badminton, they will get more funding from the government to build more facilities to accommodate the 100 million athletes that want to participate in badminton so they can keep on thriving in the sport whereas Australia would not get as much funding because they are ranked nineteenth in the world and only have 100 thousand athletes wanting to participate in badminton. Since China are ranked number one in the world their network coverage for games will be pretty good so it allows young children to see how well their country is doing making them want to be a part of it. Whereas Australia do not have any network coverage for badminton.
The next phase of me not wanting to play badminton is because of institutional level of the Figueroas Framework. The institutional level is made of community, school, facilities, rules and religion. The most affected area of the institutional level is facilities. China have seven boarding school that are based solely on education and training for badminton tournaments whereas Australia does not have any boarding schools that are solely based on education and badminton. The Australian Sporting Commission made an annual report of the amount of funding going towards each sport and between 2016 and 2017 badminton had a total amount of $635,000 whereas swimming had a total of $11,103,787 which is a huge difference between the amount of funding that goes towards both sports. This means badminton do not have as much funding to build more facilities for competitions or trainings. Whereas swimming has plenty of money to build facilities to hold big events Brisbane have 20 swimming facilities for professional swimmers to practice or for competitions. In Beijing, China they have 20 badminton facilities compared to Brisbane, they only have 10 badminton facilities. Therefore, Australia value a sport that they thrive and provide more funding for swimming. They do not value badminton as much because Australian are not as good at it the highest ranked athlete is currently Daniel Fan ranked 151st player in the world. Since Australia are not as good at badminton as they are at swimming the government do not put as much funding towards the sport to accommodate for more facilities and equipment.
Conclusion
This is why the Australian Sporting Culture affects the impact on funding, and this affects my participation and access to be able to play badminton. Even though Moreton Bay College has a badminton team, Australia do not have high values and beliefs therefore affecting the funding for the sport meaning badminton associations do not have enough money to build more facilities and get resources to advertise the sport. I do not want to play in the College badminton team because Australia is not good at it meaning if I were to play badminton professionally I would have to also work to pay for bill because Australia do not have high values and beliefs in badminton therefore I would not get enough money to pay for things.
