PICOT: in nursing staff at VEGA Medical Center (Miami, FL), how does the implementation of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2016) guidelines affect the accuracy of diagnosing and management of depression in the geriatric population within 8 weeks?
The analysis of the data of my project is still in progress, but I can share some information that is already available. Figures and tables are well-established methods of presenting data (Polit & Beck, 2017), and I intend to use them. I think that the quantitative data will be arranged in clustered columns, which can be employed to illustrate clustered data, for example, the pre- and post-implementation percentages for several quality criteria (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2017). I will also include bar graphs to illustrate the prevalence of the most important themes from qualitative data, especially those related to barriers and facilitators. Bar graphs are capable of demonstrating the prevalence (number of uses or percentage) of data, which is why it is chosen.
Regarding my findings, the quantitative data analysis is still in progress, which is why I cannot state if the changes in the quality indicators are statistically significant. Still, they are present, which implies that the project might have affected the quality of depression management at VEGA in a positive way. Also, the thematic analysis indicates that the new guidelines were successfully adopted by the nurses (according to their self-reports).
In the conclusion section, I intend to present a concise but clear picture of my research, demonstrating how its methodology provided the means for responding to the PICOT question, the specifics of the response, and its value for nursing. As for the implications of my work, I think that it offers some guidance for the VEGA center since the latter is going to proceed to practice the new guidelines. Some limited information is also presented about the effectiveness of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2016) guidelines, but it is not very conclusive. Also, my research contributes some information about the process of implementing such guidelines.
Dissemination Plan
PICOT: in nursing staff at VEGA Medical Center (Miami, FL), how does the implementation of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2016) guidelines affect the accuracy of diagnosing and management of depression in the geriatric population within 8 weeks?
The Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice, which I used as a framework for my research, views dissemination as an important part of projects (White & Spruce, 2015). I have considered certain journals, including the American Journal of Nursing (n.d.), and conferences as potential mechanisms of dissemination, but I am not sure that the publication of my project is sufficiently feasible. Instead, I am certain that the results of my research should be disseminated at the VEGA Medical Center, and I am going to present them to my peers.
Concerning VEGA, the dissemination of results is important for supporting the change (the introduction of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2016) guidelines). It will provide the nurses with the information about their progress, and it can be organized as a short-term win presentation (Spear, 2016), which is a motivational factor. Regarding the presentation of the results to my peers, it is not just a requirement of my educational program. I believe that it is also an opportunity for a dialogue that can be concerned with the content and methodology of my project. Naturally, I would welcome similar feedback from the participant nurses, but I think that the educational settings are particularly likely to promote such discussion, which will help me to improve my research skills.
The dissemination will involve the creation of presentations and, possibly, posters. I have studied the recommended resources, and I will take into account the differences between the two groups that will become my audience (Heinrich, 2012). In particular, I will focus on results with the nurses, and I will try to make the presentation motivational for them. For students, it appears more important to focus on the methodology while also considering the results. This way, I will be able to make the process engaging for both groups that I view as the most important ones for the dissemination of my projects results.
Weekly Updates
Week 1
Hi everyone,
My PICOT: in nursing staff at VEGA Medical Center (Miami, FL), how does the implementation of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2016) guidelines affect the accuracy of diagnosing and management of depression in the geriatric population within 8 weeks?
This week, I proceed with data analysis and start to organize the results, as well as the discussion and conclusion sections. Overall, the process is not very challenging; I am familiar with the general aspects of creating tables and figures, and I find it relatively easy to interpret the findings. The latter might be the result of me becoming immersed in the data. I am also going to review the entire work a couple of times before I proceed with the conclusion section because it needs to demonstrate the way my project has come together. In particular, I want to use the conclusion to illustrate the fact that my choice of methodology was adequate and capable of responding to the PICOT question. Overall, the work with the results is simpler than data analysis, and I feel that the project is nearing its completion.
Week 2
Hi everyone,
My PICOT: in nursing staff at VEGA Medical Center (Miami, FL), how does the implementation of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (2016) guidelines affect the accuracy of diagnosing and management of depression in the geriatric population within 8 weeks?
I am finishing the project and preparing to carry out my dissemination plan. I have two audience groups that are not dissimilar (VEGA nurses and my peers), but since my project has different meanings for them, I attempt to adjust my future speeches. In particular, I want to make my presentation for VEGA nurses motivational; I wish to use this opportunity to show them the results of their work and prove the fact that their efforts are appreciated. On the other hand, with my peers, I want to start a discussion of the procedures involved in the development of my project because I would like to receive some critique on this aspect of my work. I think that by managing the expectations of my audience and my own expectations, I can achieve the goals that I have for the dissemination process. I also find the task very creative and interesting, which is why any challenges related to it do not appear daunting. I enjoy this weeks activities.
