Science fiction is a genre of fiction in which stories often tell about science and technology of the future. And it even contains imagined element that does not exist in our world. It is one of the most creative genres of literature. Science fiction takes readers to another world to a different dimension to the real world. Also, Science fiction is characterized by different types of genres. For instance, post-apocalyptic is a genre that illustrate in the novel The Road by McCarthy and in the film, I Am Legend by Francis Lawrence.

The Road is a novel that belongs to the post-apocalyptic genre. In the book, it never specified what cause the apocalypse. However, it details a father and son traversing a post-apocalyptic landscape. Where the world as we know it has been destroyed leaving few survivors, little hope and danger. As the man and the boy travel, they look out for food, clothing, and supplies that help them to keep alive. Nonetheless, they encounter danger as they travel. As they arrived in a house looking for food, the dad went to the basement and encounter a horrifying scenario. He described on the mattress lay a man with his legs gone to the hip and the stumps of them blackened and burnt, naked people were kept alive for others to eat. Humans had become cannibals in order to survive, so the father and the boy live in constant fear of meeting these kinds of people. In the end, the man dies and the boy stayed with his fathers body for three days. Then a man found the boy claiming that he was also one of the good guys and the boy decided to go. This novel illustrates the aftermath of the destruction of the earth which is the post-apocalyptic; the destruction of a world but the beginning of a new one.

I Am Legend is another novel that belongs to the post-apocalyptic genre. It all started with the search to cure cancer that became a virus that turned people into vampires. Like the novel The Road, the world was destroyed leaving few survivors, little hope and danger. Robert Neville is a scientist who wanders alone with his dog calling other possible survivors and works to find a cure for the virus. In the search, he found a woman who also was looking for other survivors. And when he found the cure the vampires invaded his homes. He decided to sacrifice himself by given the cure to the woman and helping her escape so she could save the world.

To conclude, both novels explained the aftermath of the apocalypse. And in the end, both novels gave hope for a better future. The Road and I Am Legend illustrates the end of the world but also the beginning of a new one. Nonetheless, they demonstrate the evil that the main characters are up against.
