First of all, what is the definition of ‘The American Dream.’ ‘American Dream’ could be defined as having a ‘perfect life.’ It can be being wealthy, having relationships, health, cars, food, a life full of happiness, or whatever you desire, everybody has a different definition. There is not really a true definition of ‘The American Dream’ My American Dream can be different from someone else’s. That is what makes us unique. My American Dream is having a happy life with a good job, and money, spending time with my family, and especially being healthy. It seems that the issue of economic standing and prosperity is often referred to synonymously with the term ‘The American Dream.’ It seems to take money to be successful and to embrace economic stature to be accepted, however, many people who fall out of ignorance into this trap will never achieve ‘The American Dream.’
To me, the ‘American Dream’ is not just a dollar sign or an office name tag at work, but the ability to walk into a room or a home and realize that your presence is welcomed and looked forward to. The ‘American Dream’ is having the freedom to be able to control your own life and make your own choices in order to be successful. The ability to be free has made this country into the melting pot of today, and that ability still brings many immigrants to the country who believe in the ‘American Dream.’My dad came to America to achieve the ‘American Dream’, and to give our family a better lifestyle, but it was hard being separated from my father, so we decided to go to the United States with him. ‘Take care of yourself, please, and call me as soon as possible so I can know you arrived well,’ my grandma said. Our bags were already in the car. Only the hardest part was missing. Saying goodbye. My mom already had the teary eyes of the great sadness caused by saying goodbye to her beloved people. With a big hug and kiss on the cheek, my brother and I said goodbye to our family.
My mom also said goodbye, but tried to express that it was a ‘see you later and not goodbye.’ We arrived at my uncles house where my dad was staying. It was good to know that it was going back to what it used to be, the four of us together. My parents were glad to see me try learning English. One, two, three, four & and so little by little I learned to count to a hundred. I also learned the alphabet easily, however, it was not all rosy. There were sad moments when I remembered my family, my friends, and my home. As children, we do not understand the struggles that our parents go through. I asked my mom what her ‘American Dream’ was and she told me that my brother and I are her ‘American Dream.’ My parents want to see us succeed and not go through the struggles they had to go through. Now, I realize that my dad and mom crossed borders for my brother and me. They left their home country behind to give us better education, a better lifestyle, health, and a roof, and I am so blessed. My parents believed that if my brother and I worked hard enough, we could achieve everything they dreamed for us. While my parents struggle every day, their radical love gives me the privilege to thrive in a country of opportunity. I still hope that one day I will be able to repay even an ounce of all my parents sacrificed for me.
