Regina’s Summary:
Regina has been experiencing atypical behavior and uneven development. Her parents are highly concerned with Regina’s lack of response in connection to social contact. Her parents have noticed that Regina isn’t enjoying social communication compared to their two-year-old son Chris, and Regina isn’t interested in playing (baby games). Regina has demonstrated enjoyment in window blinds, hairbrushes, and utensils. When these objects are taken away from her, this leads to “meltdowns,” which include kicking, screaming, and biting for up to an hour. As for Regina’s speech she repeats some words and uses one to two-word phrases. Regina does not greet her parents, and after school drop-off, she screams for an hour each morning.
Risk and Protective Factors:
Regina’s Case has a few risk factors, starting with her age at birth. As her parents have mentioned, Regian needed oxygen at birth, which is a high risk since too much or too little oxygen can harm a baby’s developing organs. This can cause asphyxia, which can lead to developmental disabilities such as learning difficulties, movement problems, impaired hearing, and impaired vision. Regina’s lack of social communication is also a risk since social isolation during childhood can affect a child’s growth and development.
Regina’s parents are actively seeking support and resources for her during this stressful time. This is a crucial step in providing the necessary care and intervention for Regina. The availability of these support systems and resources will significantly contribute to Regina’s well-being and development.
Key Consideration (Multifactor Ecocultural Model):
The ecocultural model focuses on the socio-cultural environment of a child and family. This framework recognizes attributions of an individual culture. In Regian’s case, any intervention for Regian has to account for Regian’s Hispanic ethnicity. Understanding Regian culture and diversity can help develop empathy and compassion and create a respectful relationship with the client.
Regina’s developmental disability:
Regina shows many symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). What helped me conclude this is Regian’s delayed language skills and repetitive behaviors. Regian focuses on objects but does not understand their purpose/function. Regian seems to have trouble making eye contact since she does not greet her parents, which are all symptoms of ASD. Regian can get treatment in many different forms, such as therapies, medication, early intensive behavioral treatment, and behavioral interventions.
