My ambition to become a nurse has stemmed from a growing sense that my own personal fulfillment comes from serving those who are most vulnerable. Throughout my later school years, I worked in a hospitality role, thus where I developed my communication skills which allowed me to relate to the demands of other people. Once I had left school and took on a job at the local nursing home as a care assistant I truly understood how satisfying such work could be it allowed me to feel some sort of pride and purpose in my day-to-day life. Daily, I was put in challenging situations, working firsthand with residents who faced dementia and understanding their frustration and agitation about not being able to express themselves effectively. I also worked with terminally ill patients, which allowed me to understand the emotional demands of nursing but also gave me a huge sense of reward that the job comes with as you can make an impact on someone’s life. For example, in the recent events of coronavirus, one resident has experienced great distress with his mental health as he feels alone. I felt great sympathy for the man and offered my compassion and comfort. It is Situations like this that make me proud and appreciative to be able to be in a career where I can always help someone. From my personal experience and working alongside nurses I can see that nursing is a demanding job and calls for personal commitment more than any other career, but also through my experience I have realized that the field is both rewarding and endlessly interesting which brings me enthusiasm and passion for my future career. My patience and perseverance, organization skills, and ability to adapt to situations have been deepened throughout the last year all of which qualities would be useful to me in different situations I will be faced with in the future. In the last year, I have come to understand the strain the field can have on many people, you must be extremely malleable and adaptable to whatever situation you are faced with. I also completely understand the need for a strong work ethic as I already at such a young age have had to deal with such in my current job I am both physically and mentally prepared for what is expected in my future as a nurse.
I have participated in many extracurricular activities throughout my school time such as being School Captain, this allowed me to develop several skills such as leadership and being able to take control in situations that consist of quick decision making which would be beneficial as nurses are faced with challenging and demanding decisions daily. I also completed my MVP (mentor in violence prevention) training, Which allowed me to work with children of all ages and understand both physically and mentally the struggles young children face; here I gained compassion, sensitivity, and empathy throughout this process as I was helping these children on an emotional level. After completing the training we were given the opportunity to present and inform the other students, which allowed me to expand my communication and social skills such as public speaking. Both made me a more confident individual and allowed me to be more approachable and welcoming to others. Which will help me greatly throughout my University experience. Outside of school, I enjoy dancing which I also do competitively. This demonstrates my ambition and drive as I always aim to perform my best and stay motivated in all I do, this also allows me to work with younger children as I volunteer to teach classes weekly. Working with children gives me great joy and a sense of fulfillment as it allows me to create bonds and impact their future. Being able to balance Work-life, school life, social life, and hobbies shows I can manage my time successfully and always aim to stay on top of my responsibilities.
